About Us:(back to top)

The MSR is a full-service resource — from extensive sample preparation laboratories to image-processing tools — allowing OSUCCC investigators to carry out their entire microscopy and analysis program at Ohio State.

The mission of the MSR is to empower cancer researchers by providing access to advanced microscopy technologies, expert knowledge, and collaborative support that accelerates discovery, enhances data quality, and drives innovation.

The MSR has the following aims:

  • Provide access to cutting edge microscopy instrumentation
  • Reduce barriers to entry to advanced microscopy technologies
  • Serve as a comprehensive resource for education and training in microscopy research
  • Accelerate research progress and enhance outcomes
  • Act as a hub for facilitating collaborative research

The MSR plays an essential role in allowing cancer investigators to translate fundamental studies of cancer biology into new treatments.

Meet the Team (back to top)

Jeffrey Tonniges, PhD - Co- Director tonniges.1@osu.edu

Jeffrey Tonniges, PhD
Jeff joined the CMIF in 2020 and took over as interim director in 2024 and then co-director in 2025. He received a MS in physics from Creighton University, where he studied the photo- and biophysical properties of lipophilic dyes. He received his PhD in biophysics from the Ohio State University, where he studied the structure and function of collagen in numerous tissues. He has expertise in biological TEM, confocal, multiphoton, TIRF, and STORM microscopy.

Richard Fishel, PhD - Co- Director, CMIF rfishel@osu.edu

Richard Fishel, PhD
Dr. Fishel is a professor in the Department of Cancer Biology and Genetics at The Ohio State University, where he also serve as co-leader of the Molecular Carcinogenesis and Chemoprevention Program at the OSUCCC – James. His research interests include DNA repair and genomic instability in cancer development, the biophysical chemistry of DNA repair as well as single-molecule imaging and tracking in vitro and in vivo.
