About Us (back to top)
The Comparative Pathology and Digital Imaging Shared Resource (CPDISR) provides expert, affordable, experimental pathology support to OSUCCC – James researchers who use animal models to study human disease.
The CPDISR provides support for preclinical efficacy and toxicity animal studies, as well as translational studies that utilize human tissues procured for research. Comprehensive services provided by the CPDISR include: animal blood and other biofluid analyses; macroscopic and microscopic examinations of full tissue sets from various species of laboratory animals; comprehensive histology services on paraffin-embedded and frozen tissues, encompassing special histochemical stains and immunohistochemical/immunofluorescent labeling optimized for animal and human tissues; slide digitization and quantitative image analysis; and hands-on training and consultation for select techniques. CPDISR comparative pathologists are experts in the normal anatomy and physiology, background age- and strain-/breed-related lesions, infectious pathogens, husbandry practices and experimental models of various animal model species. Lesion recognition and interpretation within individual investigations provides a critical component to research that incorporates animal models.

Need assistance scheduling? Please contact us! Samples must be submitted through our online submission system, eRAMP interfaced to eREQUEST, through logging in with your Ohio State login (name.#). Once users receive email notification of fiscal approval, samples can then be delivered to the CPDISR for processing.
Please do not submit live animal or blood samples to the lab without scheduling in advance.
Please contact the CPDISR at 614-247-8122 or CPDISR@cvm.osu.edu with questions regarding our online service requests to coordinate scheduled delivery of animals/samples and prior to submission of live animals and blood samples.

Experienced histotechnologists provide complete histology services, including tissue processing, embedding and sectioning of both paraffin-embedded and frozen animal tissues. Routine stains such as hematoxylin and eosin, and an extensive menu of both special histochemical and immunohistochemical stains and labels optimized specifically for use on mouse and other animal tissues, are available and continuously expanded. Such stains facilitate the identification of infectious agents, apoptotic and proliferating cells, angiogenesis, hematopoietic cell lineages and more.

Clinical Pathology Services (Back to top)
Services include hematology (complete blood counts with white blood cell differentials), serum biochemical panels, analysis of urine and other body fluids and cytology.
Qualified laboratory professionals trained in veterinary laboratory techniques perform all tests. The laboratory staff is committed to research in improved diagnostics, reference range development and state-of-the art assays. New tests are continually added as experimental needs change. A network of reference laboratories is available for tests not performed in-house.
The CPDISR participates in quarterly quality assurance testing for hematology and chemistry of laboratory animal samples in addition to the urinalysis and cytology modules through the Veterinary Laboratory Association.
Experimental Design and Data Interpretation (Back to top)
Comparative pathologists actively participate in experimental design prior to submitting animals/tissues for pathologic evaluation as well as for subsequent studies and data interpretation. Recommendations are given for various ancillary tests (i.e. more specialized clinical pathology testing, electron microscopy, imaging, behavioral or physiological testing) provided by other shared resources or Ohio State research laboratories to further elucidate identified morphologic lesions or to rule out functional abnormalities when no morphologic lesions are found.
Routine contributions are also made to grant applications, manuscripts and oral/poster presentations in the form of digital photographs of macroscopic and microscopic lesions, details about methods and pathologic findings, interpretation of results and overall critical editorial review. Interested in having a comparative pathologist assist with designing your animal study, making pathology figures for your manuscript, or writing a grant letter of support? Contact us!
