We have opportunities to mentor area High School, OSU Undergraduate, and Kenyon College students. Our programs are listed here. Mentor’s Responsibilities
- Complete the mentor training requirement (information below)
- Clarify expectations and set specific goals
- Conduct regularly scheduled individual meetings with the trainees
- Contact CAMELOT with any issues regarding the trainee’s attendance or performance
- Be a resource for problem-solving and moral support
- Be open to the trainee’s concerns about performance, interactions with colleagues, and the workplace environment
- Encourage strategic thinking
- Identify gaps in knowledge
- Encourage the building of a professional network within and outside of OSU
- Encourage trainees to attend CAMELOT career development activities
- Attend trainee and poster/speaker symposium
- Enforce the full-time work schedule (32-40 hours, Mon-Fri) through the duration of the program
- Trainees are not permitted to take vacation during the duration of the program
Trainee’s Responsibilities
- Clarify mentorship needs and set priorities
- Explicitly request help
- Seek out learning opportunities and develop them with mentor
- Set up a system for regular or periodic communication; maintain productive relationship with mentor:
- Send an agenda two or more days in advance, along with any documents for discussion o Email a summary of what was discussed after each meeting, with next steps
- Keep mentorship activity log
- Actively engage mentor in proposed research and educational/training activities
- Attend CAMELOT career development activities
- Contact CAMELOT with any issues regarding mentor, lab setting, schedule, or personnel
Mentor Training Requirement
As part of our ongoing commitment to strengthening the OSUCCC training environment and ensuring alignment with NIH expectations, we are implementing a new mentor training requirement for all faculty who serve as mentors in any CAMELOT-sponsored programs (CREATES, PSP) or on NIH-funded training grants (e.g., T32, K awards, R25 programs). All mentors must provide proof of mentor training completed within the past five (5) years. This training will remain valid for five years from the date of completion. If you have completed mentor training in the last five years: Please email kelly.wolfe@osumc.edu with the following information:
- Name of the training
- Training format (e.g., in-person, online module, workshop series)
- Date of completion
- Proof of completion (certificate, email, etc.)
If you have NOT completed formal mentor training in the past five years:
CAMELOT has evaluated the available options and recommends the following mentor training program(s):
**RECOMMENDED** Minnesota Online Mentoring program (Approx. 120 min): Optimizing the Practice of Mentoring 101: For Research Mentors of Graduate Students, Fellows, and Early-Career Faculty
